How to Install Door Handles | Install Detail
Installing a door handle is quite simple. The steps and tools needed are similar, no matter the style or function. Therefore, I can share with you how to install a door handle.
This set of accessories serves different functions for a door handle, and someone labels each accessory. If you have some experience in installing door handles, you can refer to them briefly. However, for friends without experience, carefully observe each step and follow the sequence to operate. I believe you can also install the door handle independently.
Step 1: Measure the thickness of the door and the length of the door edge distance.
Yes, you read it right. Initially, you didn't open a hole in the door; you needed to measure the thickness of the door.
The standard door thickness is 1-3/8" (35mm) or 1-3/4" (45mm). The 1-3/8" thickness is common for interior or lightweight doors. Manufacturers often make these doors of wood or light steel, and people use them in homes or offices. The 1-3/4" thickness is usually for commercial or entrance doors.
After measuring the door's thickness, you should know there are two options for the locking length of the handle. These options are 2-3/8" (60mm) and 2-3/4" (70mm). Professionals call this distance "Backset." It measures the space from the center of the door hole to the edge of the door.
If the door you bought has holes, you can check with customer service. They can help you confirm the backset and thickness of the door. If it's easier, you can measure it yourself. When you purchase a door handle, the salesperson will also confirm these two data with you.
These two data points cannot be wrong. If one of them is wrong, the door handles you bought won't fit your door. Even with customer service, it will take a lot of time. (If you like it, please ignore what I just said.)
Step 2: Make a lock hole and a latch hole in the door.
After understanding the data of the door, we need to open a hole in the door. You might not need to do it yourself.
Some door salespeople will help you drill holes for free when you buy the door. This way, you can complete this task without any damage. Congratulations (fireworks)!
But there are inevitably exceptions. What if this service doesn't exist?
So I still need to discuss it. We purchased the door handle from our website store, oh! Not only the door handle but also every door lock product comes with an opening hole diagram, just like this:
This is a standard opening diagram. Let's first focus on two backset data, which are the distances from the center of the door opening to the edge of the door. A dashed line is on the left side of these two data points. Fold along the dashed line and align it with the door edge accurately.
Install the door handle 900-1000mm above the ground. You can base the exact height on personal preference and habits. Here are the pictures I took myself:
Next, look at the backset length of the door handle you bought. Choose the center of the circle and mark it, or mark where the edge of the hole is.
After marking, remove the drawing and use a saw or other tool to drill holes. Drill holes that are 2-1/8 inches wide. This is the standard size in the United States. Drill slowly and straight down to avoid mistakes.
We have completed the production of the door hole. We need to make a rectangular cut on the side of the door.
This cut should be 1/8" deep, 2-1/4" long, and 1" wide. Someone will hold the face plate. We also need a hole with a 1" diameter for the lock tongue.
Similarly, we need to attach the drawing to the side of the door and mark it with a tool to open the hole. Note that the center of the lock tongue hole needs to be on the same horizontal line as the center of the door handle hole. You can drill the two screws of the face plates into 20mm with an electric drill, as the screw length is 20mm.
At this point, we have completed the door handle holes and face plate holes, and we will move on to the installation process next.
Step 3: Install the door handle
We will use the disassembly pictures from the start for this step. The serial numbers show the parts in the pictures. First, there is the door handle for privacy and passage functions. The privacy handle has one extra pin (8) compared to the passage handle.
The first step in installing the door handles with these two functions is to install the tubular latch and face plate (1 and 2). The latch tongue has a curved side and a straight side. One side of the curved surface faces outside the door, while the straight side faces inside the door.
Our doors usually open inward. The curved side of the latch tongue faces outward.
This design helps reduce wear on the latch tongue when it is closed. It makes the latch more durable. Moreover, the side of the latch tongue facing inward enhances the resistance to violent breaking and increases safety.
After fixing the tubular latch, insert the swift spine (5) into the tubular latch in any direction. The Swivel Spindle (5) has a small bead for fixing purposes. When you put the bead into the tubular latch, you can press it down to insert it. You can do the same thing when you want to remove it.
Next, place the Interior lever (6) and Exterior lever (7) into the door opening. Then, secure them with a through screw. Be careful to avoid mistakes in the handles of the inner and outer doors.
The Exterior lever has two screw holes. If you turn these two handles upside down, outsiders can remove your lock, and then this lock will have no effect.
Each door handle has two pairs of screws. The shorter pair fits a door thickness of 2-3/8" (60mm). The longer pair is for a door thickness of 2-3/4" (70mm).
The door handle now works for passage. The privacy door handle has an extra privacy-pin hole on the lock plate of the exterior lever. Install the privacy pin (8) like a screw to have a privacy function. You can use the door handle with a privacy function on doors that require privacy, such as bathrooms, toilets, or bedrooms.
The single dummy and double dummy door handles do not need the same installation steps as the tubular latch. They also do not require opening holes. They only need to fix them to the door with screws.
This is the step to installing the door handle on the door. I hope this is helpful to you. Thank you for watching.
