Often called a "Mortise Lock" or "European-Style Lock", its core is a pre-assembled, independent lock case (Mortise Lock Body) installed into a pocket (mortise) cut into the door edge. The handle (Lever) and the separate lower lock cylinder are distinct components screwed onto both sides of the door and connected to the lock body. Key advantages include:

  • Enhanced Security: The sturdy lock case accommodates longer, heavier deadbolts and latches.
  • Modular Design: The lever, cylinder, and even the latch can be replaced individually, greatly simplifying maintenance, upgrades, or re-keying.

  • Premium Aesthetics: The separate design allows for greater variety in lever styles and materials, paired with different cylinder roses (escutcheons).

What materials are typically used for the lock body, lever, and cylinder?

  • Lock Body: Commercial-grade bodies use high-strength zinc alloy, forged steel, or solid brass for impact resistance and durability.
  • Lever: Wide selection including zinc alloy, brass, stainless steel, or designs with crystal/ceramic inlays. Levers typically have a reinforced metal core.
  • Cylinder: Usually a standard European Profile cylinder, which can be upgraded to high-security drill-resistant, pick-resistant, and bump-resistant cylinders, supporting various key systems.

Is installation complicated? What are the door requirements?

Installation is more complex than standard bored locks, requiring aprecise rectangular pocketto be cut into the door edge for the lock case. Professional installation using a dedicatedmortising jigis strongly recommended. Minimum door thickness is typically1-3/8 inches (35mm) or greater. We provide detailedinstallation templates and diagrams.
